For urgent or severe symptoms, seek emergency care.

How do I increase or adjust my dosage?

Do the injections need to be refrigerated?

Yes. GLP-1 medications must be kept refrigerated until use.

What is the difference between compounded GLP-1 and medications like semaglutide or tirzepatide?

Compounded GLP-1 medications are custom-prepared by a compounding pharmacy. They contain the same active ingredient, but unlike brand-name formulations such as semaglutide or tirzepatide, the compounded versions are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

What is the difference between semaglutide and tirzepatide?

Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 receptor alone. Tirzepatide targets both the GLP-1 receptor and the GIP receptor. Tirzepatide tends to produce faster and often greater weight loss although both are considered effective and safe.

Are compounded GLP-1 medications FDA approved?

No. Compounded GLP-1 medications are not FDA approved. They are allowed only when prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy, typically as an alternative during shortages or for individualized dosing.

Can I use GLP-1s if I am already on weight-loss medication?

Possibly. In some cases the combination may be safe. Your provider will need to review your current medications and medical history to determine whether GLP-1 therapy is appropriate for you.

Who should avoid taking GLP-1 medications?

People with a history of medullary thyroid cancer, MEN2, pancreatitis, serious gastrointestinal disorders, or certain problematic drug interactions may be ineligible. Your provider will screen your medical history to decide if GLP-1 therapy is suitable.

Why are compounded GLP-1s more affordable?

Compounded medications are not mass-produced or brand marketed. As a result pharmacies can charge less. This often makes compounded GLP-1 a lower-cost alternative for patients.

How do I administer the injections?

These GLP-1 injections are given under the skin in areas such as the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Your care team provides instructions for how to self-administer properly.

Does the injection hurt?

For most people, the discomfort is minimal. The injection uses a small needle and rotating injection sites helps reduce soreness or irritation.

Can I travel with my medication?

Yes. You can travel with GLP-1 medication. Keep it refrigerated according to instructions and carry it in your carry-on luggage with the prescription label visible.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to your next scheduled dose. Do not double dose. If you are unsure, contact your provider for guidance.

What should I do with used needles?

Used needles should be placed in a sharps container or other puncture resistant container. Follow local disposal rules or take them to a designated hazardous or sharps disposal site.

Do I need to follow a specific diet or workout plan?

A strict plan is not required. However, combining GLP-1 treatment with a balanced diet and regular physical activity generally leads to better outcomes.

Will my appetite change right away?

Many individuals notice a drop in appetite within the first week. Appetite suppression often increases gradually as the dosage is adjusted upward.

Will weight come back if I stop taking GLP-1 medication?

It is possible, especially if healthy eating and exercise habits are not continued. Maintaining lasting results usually requires long-term lifestyle changes beyond just medication.

Is the program suitable for long-term use?

Yes. When supervised by a healthcare provider, GLP-1 therapy can be used long term. Many patients stay on treatment to preserve weight loss and metabolic benefits.

Can GLP-1 medications cause pancreatitis?

Although rare, pancreatitis is a serious potential risk. If you have severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Can GLP-1 medications cause depression?

Depression is not a common side effect. Some people may experience temporary changes in mood when beginning treatment. If these persist, inform your provider.

Can GLP-1 medications cause hair loss?

GLP-1 drugs are not known to directly cause hair loss. However, rapid weight loss can sometimes trigger temporary hair shedding which often resolves once weight stabilizes.

Can GLP-1 medications cause headaches?

Yes. Headaches may occur early in treatment. Drinking enough water and eating regularly can help reduce this side effect.

Can GLP-1 medications be taken orally?

Yes. There is an oral option for GLP-1 therapy such as Rybelsus. However, injectable forms of GLP-1 are generally associated with stronger weight-loss effects.

Can GLP-1 medications cause anxiety?

Anxiety is not commonly reported as a side effect. Some individuals might feel mild restlessness when first adjusting to the medication.

Do I need to have a certain BMI to qualify for a GLP-1 prescription?

Generally, patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher or a BMI of 27 or higher combined with related health conditions such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, elevated cholesterol, or other metabolic concerns are considered. Your full medical history will be evaluated even if your BMI is lower.
